What is TRUE HEPA? Is it really any better than other filters?

Explain it like I'm Five

Imagine the air in your home is full of teeny-tiny bits of dust and germs you can’t see. A HEPA filter is like a super-strong net that scoops through the air and catches them, kind of like fishing! Some filters say they’re HEPA, but they’re more like a net with big holes, stuff still sneaks through. A true HEPA filter catches almost everything, helping keep the air in your home cleaner and making you feel better.

What is a HEPA filter?

According to the EPA: "HEPA is a type of pleated mechanical air filter. It is an acronym for "high efficiency particulate air [filter]" (as officially defined by the U.S. Dept. of Energy).  This type of air filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns (µm)."

Beware of fake HEPA

There are plenty of brands toting "HEPA" quality when it does not actually meet the DOE criteria of HEPA. According to Austin Air: "True Medical Grade HEPA removes 99.97% of all particles that are 0.3 microns or larger. Beware of other products using ‘HEPA type’ filters, they are not as effective as Medical Grade HEPA and will not give you the protection you need."

Our products have HEPA filters you can trust

We partner with brands that have a proven track record and products steeped in quality and research. In fact, every product we stock has true HEPA quality. Nothing less. Austin Air for example takes great pride in using only the highest quality filtration media. They use 60 sq. ft of True Medical Grade in all their standard size filters. They say: "this ensures the effective removal of allergens, viruses*, bacteria and dust. And our unique carbon blend is designed to remove the gases, chemicals, VOC’s and odors that are often present in modern homes. The result is a filter that provides up to 5 years of protection."
